Back in August we popped down to Blackley to speak to local tenant, Dave Lee, who has recently swapped his traditional gas boiler system for a new air source heat pump - and he couldn't be more thrilled with the results.
Reflecting on the experience, Dave describes the installation and performance of his new system as "absolutely fabulous."
Gone are the old gas boiler, radiators, and pipes, which were removed to make way for the modern, low-carbon heating unit. The air source heat pump now sits where his old water boiler used to be, a transformation that Dave says was carried out in record time. “The whole installation took about 7.5 hours,” he shares, still in awe. “It really was unbelievable.”
The installation team also left a lasting impression on Dave with their professionalism and knowledge. "They’re so polite. Very clean, and very, very knowledgeable," he recalls. "They all knew exactly what to do and got stuck in."
Having never used an air source heat pump before, Dave is impressed by the efficiency and capability of this technology. “I can't get over the fact that this machine here is heating the house, heating the hot water to such a temperature, and so quick,” he marvels.
Within just a few hours after installation, he was able to enjoy hot water on demand. “I've not been used to that for years and years," he adds, smiling.
Dave is also optimistic about the long-term financial benefits. His first bill since the installation was a pleasant surprise, reflecting significant savings.
“If the savings are going to be what I think they're going to be, it’s well, well, well worth the money.”

When asked what he’d say to other council residents considering an air source heat pump, Dave is quick to encourage them. “If other council residents are a little bit worried about getting this work done, I’d tell them that you can’t go wrong with it. Do not hesitate – with the amount of money that you're going to save – get it installed and start saving.”
Summing up his top three reasons for recommending the switch, Dave highlights the speed of installation, the cost savings, and the positive environmental impact. “If Manchester City Council contacts you, say yes immediately,” he advises, seeing the benefits not only for residents but also for the planet.
